Salt & Pepper Canisters - Vic Ash & Brushed Aluminium
I made these canisters with slow mornings in mind. I wanted to create a product that is harmonious to other kitchenware items. With a lot of my designs, I want the materials to do the talking, keeping forms minimal, and not adding unnecessary design features. The two aluminium tubes have a solid base for stability, and hand drilled holes in the top lids, held in place using a friction fit, the holes indicate which ingredient is to be placed in each. The base is made using Victorian Ash, stained using a food-safe stain, and houses the two cylinders satisfyingly. Below are some insights into how I produced this product.
I started this project off with some very rough sketches. I wanted to try and get into CAD as soon as possible. This allowed me to get the idea out of my head and into a 3D model. They started off as simple ellipses, but with some conversation with manufacturers, i altered the design to be cylindrical. I also modified the wooden housing component to be more compatible with NC milling machines.
I then proceeded to add to the model on solidworks, creating a multi-body part, that could be changed universally from the mother part (tube). I did this to make it simpler if I encountered restrictive manufacturing parameters. I also added an almost solid base part. I did this to make it feel more solid, and prevent the canister from falling over. There is a 2.5mm inset grove for a silicone o ring to be placed, this will keep the contents safe while in use.
